Representing her beautiful Country Barbados, Keeleigh 27, charmed the judges with her poise, wit, and beauty, and I too was charmed with her fun personality, simplicity, and down-to-earth goodness. I was pleased to get the chance to interview the beautiful Keeleigh, Miss Caribbean 2014, and then made arrangements for her to meet & greet the current Dean of all the Afro Caribbean High Commissions in England, His Excellency Mr Laleshwar KN Singh, CCH The High Commissioner for the Republic of Guyana High Commission to the Court of Saint James. Also in attendance was Ms Keishanna Sullivan (First Secretary) and Director of the pageant Mrs Jacqui Brown. I think I can safely say that is was truly an honour and truly a pleasure to have had the opportunity to be at the meeting. How did you feel when you heard your name called as the winner of Miss Caribbean 2014? I was really shocked. I wanted to win but I didn’t expect to win. Amazing feeling! How long have you been doing what you do & when did you start? I have done a bit of modelling for friends here and there. But this was my first ever pageant. Do you think that your choice of business has change you for better or worse? For better for sure. I am much more confident in myself. Do you have the support of your family when you said you wanted to take part in Miss Caribbean? I have the support of my family in whatever I do. They were very proud and supportive of me entering. What reaction do you tend to get from friends regarding you being in Miss Caribbean? My friends are really happy for me and very positive. I get a positive reaction from everybody. Cover Page Feature What do you consider are your main passions in life now? My main passions now is to complete my degree and use that to be successful in business. I want to inspire people and show that anything is possible once you work hard and remain focused. What would be your best choice of where to live in the world and why? It would have to be Barbados as I have family and friends there. Not to mention the food, music and the warmth. What are your plans for the New Year 2015 now you are the very first Miss Caribbean? Since becoming the first Miss Caribbean UK so many opportunities have arisen so my aim is to focus on giving my all to every event/ show and remaining an ambassador for Miss Caribbean UK and leaving a legacy for the future Miss Caribbean UK. How was it for you be able to meet with His Excellency Mr. Laleshwar KN Singh, CCH T The High Commissioner for Guyana? I felt very fortunate to meet His Excellency Mr Laleshwar KN Singh. It made it even more special that I was able to my Granddad with me to meet him.
2015 What did you love most about life when you were growing up? Being around my family and travelling. I’m a family girl. That’s important to me. What did you make of the statement that the High Commissioner made about Afro Caribbean's via Guyana need trade with Africa? It was very fascinating to hear that both AfroCaribbean and African countries are actively campaigning for unity in the trade and industry sector. They have a lot of work to do but I wish them every success. Describe in three words your experience of what is love? It’s a rollercoaster. There’s three words. Time waits for nobody, if you had you the chance to do things again what would you do different? So far things have worked out well for me. EMOTIONAL BANK ACCOUNT By Tony Andrews
W
e are now well into the month of February 2015 and Valentine’s Day is upon us. For many there are secret expectations, subtle obligations or quiet anticipations of what may or may not be. Those in a relationship either start planning their excursion, expenses or excuses. Those free and single may either have their head in the clouds about what it might mean to have that special Valentine, be counting their adoring fans or may simply bury their head in the sand at what they may see as a commercial exploitation of romance and love. At this time of year, roses are mass produced and come in a number of varieties from bargain basement at the station or supermarket, to custom made floral tributes costing in the hundreds. Quality can often suffer compared to the same product bought at other times of the year and few would deny that prices clearly seem to sky rocket. So does ticking the box to say you got your Valentine a thoughtful gift, beyond they usual flowers, chocolate and teddy bear, fulfil romantic desire or is there more to it? One of the biggest impacts that can be made, in terms of romantic gestures, is doing something spontaneous and unexpected to show appreciation, thoughtfulness and good old charm. Often, waiting until Birthdays, Christmas and Valentines can lessen the impact as there’s often an expectation that something is on the way. Possibly the most boring, least spontaneous and arguably the
least thoughtful way is to simply ask, “What do you want for your birthday/Christmas/ Valentines?” And then simply go out and purchase said item. That’s simply like an ATM Cash Machine asking you how much you want to withdraw. Hardly romantic!

To know his or her needs, especially in those areas where they may be neglecting their own needs. For example, if he’s into gadgets but rarely buys clothes, should you buy him the latest gadget or a good pair of jeans? He may appreciate the gadget, but then again, if he’s an expect on such items, you’ll have to know exactly what he wants, or you risk buying something that he sees as inferior, inappropriate or simply will not truly appreciate. However, if his weakness is let’s say, in the fashion department, then picking something you know will look great on him, may be far more appreciated. Not only have you given him something of material value, the clothes themselves, but you have also used your own potential strength to plug one of his potential weaknesses. This is true synergy in a relationship, where one of you is weak, the other is strong. This leads to, “What would I do without you. You’re so good for me,” which of course leads to great feelings between you. So much better than, “How much is that gadget you really want, I’ll get it for you this Valentines”.

When it comes to money, most of us have a bank account, and those in very serious relationships often have a joint financial bank account. However, in all relationships, including friendships, we have a special invisible account called the “emotional bank account”. Every time we do something good, thoughtful and helpful for someone, we top up and make a deposit into their emotional bank account. Every time we let them down, disappoint or upset them, we make a withdrawal. So what is your style. Do you make big deposits a few times per year? Or do you make small and often top ups? That is to say, do you make big grand gestures on special occasions or do little things to show you care on regular basis? Perhaps you do both or none (if you’re single or very soon to be!) Always remember that the most important relationship that you have is with yourself and if it is your belief, with your Creator. For your significant other and everybody else, the most important gift you can give another person is yourself: that is your thoughtfulness, your time, your attention and love. To do this requires three elements: to know, to like, to trust. People only do regular significant business with people that they know, like and trust. The disintegration of all relationships boils down to a breakdown of one or more of these elements: You no longer know the person, “they’ve changed; we’ve grown apart”. You no longer like the person, “they annoy me; certain things they do are a big turn off”. You no longer trust the person, “they’re unreliable; they betrayed me”. In order to keep the account stacked high in any of your relationships, especially that with your special other half if you have one, there must be a constant process of getting to know him or her, liking each other which is about acceptance and trusting one another which is about having faith, not just in each other, but also in the future and whatever may come. Many couples choose to ignore Valentine’s Day, or not take it too seriously, as they have their own ways and values in expressing their love and intimacy for each other, that go beyond a generic date in the international calendar. Other couples choose to go all out and book time off work and fly out to exotic locations or mark the occasion at home with complete pampering and care for one another. Whichever style and choice you choose to mark the occasion, if at all, always remember that in all our interactions we’re either making a deposit or withdrawal with the person we are with or speaking to. Eating fresh fruits of all kinds is very important to our everyday and long-term health. Blueberries have a particular reputation as a super food for very good reason; rich in antioxidants such as anthocyanin, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, zinc and selenium they help protect the body and may even help assist you with your strength workout.
EXERCISE:
Don’t make the mistake of doing a resistance workout on an empty stomach. A recent study suggested that consuming blueberries one hour before lifting weights not only helps boost energy but also reduces oxidative stress and demonstrates anti inflammatory benefits, helping to prevent muscle damage.

Redundancy Transition: By Jenni Williams
Opportunity to strengthen your key Relationship? The emotional fall out triggered by redundancy is often compared to bereavement, in terms of the deep sense of personal loss, and the tsunami-like wave of emotions it brings, and when you have a partner in the picture, both of you feel the loss. Following the recent Banking crisis-led recession, there is much less stigma attached to losing your job, and for many the opportunity to re-evaluate your life can become a major turning point, and you may even decide to take a different path. When you suddenly find yourself on the receiving end of redundancy, you tend to notice the need for more trust and loyalty in your personal relationship, particularly since the trust you placed in your organisation no longer exists. Then there is the roller coaster of emotions you have to contend with. Losing your job can cause your self- esteem to plummet, as well as your sense of security and your self-respect. The uninvited variety of emotions that occur, show up in no particular order, and their duration is unpredictable. Here are a few common ones. After a period of being in limbo, once you receive confirmation that your post is to be terminated, the news may bring you an initial sense of relief. The partner who is made redundant, may feel the need to vent their anger towards their boss, the company, the economy. Individuals who express this emotion often talk about the loss of control that adds fuel to this emotion. Their response may be intense, consuming, and difficult to both manage and express. The partner who is in work will need to be more supportive, and aim to give their loved one as much air time as possible. Be courageous and help your partner to be as constructive as possible once they are able to get their angry outbursts off their chest – however frustrating it becomes at times. Denial is a common, yet a difficult response to tackle, where the partner who has been made redundant refuses to discuss it, or blocks it out completely by focusing on activities like DIY around the home. This delaying tactic can become a cover for other emotional assaults like depression, which may not bubble to the surface for some time. The sense of loss experienced after redundancy can extend to your whole life, you may feel a loss of status, structure, job satisfaction, security and personal identity. This is when it is particularly challenging for your loved one to understand what you are going through, unless you are prepared to talk about it. To your partner, you may appear to undergo a
character change, and that can be a scary experience for both of you.
Self-Searching
The shock is often followed by a time of selfsearching, exploring the question “who am I really” and how do I survive this? This is perfectly natural when your self-image has taken a severe battering. It has the effect of opening the way for individuals to begin to get to grips with their next steps, and start considering their options, by networking and exploring the market and looking for a match between their strengths and their skills.
Who to tell?
When it comes to sharing the unfortunate news, it is challenging to know who to tell. The obvious people to turn to first is your immediate family, who may be able to help. It is almost always harder and more stressful not to mention your situation, besides they could provide the emotional cushion you need. Also, consider saying something appropriate to older children to help them feel included and less anxious. Telling friends has its risks, some may react negatively and gradually cut you off, but your real friends will show that they care, and you could be surprised by who steps forward to offer you support. It’s a good idea to talk about it in social situations before someone asks “how is your job-hunting going?”
Be your Partner’s Strength
Relationships can reach breaking point as a result of the high levels of stress caused by redundancy, yet some couples find that it binds them closer together. Where lingering
issues already exist, (such as disagreements about spending habits, saving habits and priorities), redundancy triggered financial pressure often forces them to the surface. Relationships where happiness is measured according to material success, and where money for example is used to “smooth over relationship cracks” could be particularly prone to instability at such a testing time. The working partner may feel resentful about carrying the added burden of their partner. Perhaps they are having to take on extra hours, rearrange childcare, defer or shelve planned holidays. It may be that up until one partner was made redundant, the couple kept their finances separate and so coming up with for example a joint budget, in order to ride out the redundancy storm becomes an exercise that neither party looks forward to undertaking. In situations like this honesty is the best policy, and facing up to and discussing money issues, and any negative feelings that you may be experiencing with your partner is key. For the working partner, bolstering your partner is key, encourage them to express their feelings and let off steam, so that the chances of them allowing their emotions to become unmanageable and potentially boil over are greatly reduced. Be as attentive and as outwardly affectionate as possible, help your other half, who has been made redundant see how much they matter to you, and that you are both in this together. Also, remember to highlight their strong points. Remember that your partner’s sense of significance is affected by how they think you see them, because they love and trust you. redundant can initiate, your partner needs to know that you accept them just as they are, and that you believe in them. As the partner in work, make a decision whether you want to or not, to be accepting of their state of mind, whether upset, angry, frustrated or even depressed. Unless it becomes necessary, steer clear of trying to solve their problems, give them the space to work things out for themselves, your key role is simply listen and encourage. Empathise when they feel miserable, stand by them whenever their self-confidence takes a dive. Be wary of attempting to be their critical friend, especially when you yourself feel frustrated with your partner’s situation or even their perceived lack of motivation or progress. Above all take one day at a time, don’t expect too much from either your partner or yourself. That is a great way to allow your partner’s transition through redundancy to be an opportunity to strengthen your relationship, and prove that together you can weather any storm that life throws your way.

awn Spence interviews Andrew Williams, Counsellor and Trainee Transactional Analyst. He is of Jamaican parentage and was born in the UK. He lives in London and in addition to his private practice in Central London, he works in the NHS as a Psychological Practitioner for the Waltham Forest Talking Therapy IAPT (Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies). Tell us about Transactional Analysis? Transactional Analysis is a form of understanding the human personality and the Dynamics of the interaction between individuals. It was pioneered by Eric Berne, who was a Psychoanalyst in the 1950’s, who broke away from the typical Freudian Psychoanalytical mainstream treatment, because he felt that Psychoanalysis was not placing enough emphasis on acknowledging the transaction that was taking place between individuals. So from this perspective, he developed the model of Transactional Analysis (TA) Psychotherapy is very much under subscribed within the black community at large in the UK. Why do you think this is? I think we have a history of our parents

telling us as children, to keep our business to ourselves and that has filtered down in our psyche at large and as a result, we find it difficult to share our innermost thoughts and feelings with another person. Typically, psychotherapy has been a middle class institution and therefore we think that it is not something that we do, which of course I do not agree with, but I think it is a belief that those factors are difficult to change. Also in the UK, this service is not made as available to us as easily as in the US for instance. Another factor is that we need more black therapists, especially men to represents our culture. There is already a large proportion of women in the industry, but I feel that more black men would come forward, if there was a larger representation of black male therapists. How do you think we can change this? By making it more known in the communities that this service is available and having more black mentors that are accessible in the communities. I am part of a black men’s group called The Black and Asian Therapists Network (BAAN). This group is made up of black and Asian Psychotherapists, who come together to promote and brain storm ideas on how we can get more black and Asian people to come to see us and to join the industry as well. So we are trying to get the word out there. Personally I like dealing with black clients and I think this is because I understand the idiom of our language and the idiosyncrasies of our culture. I think that in my case, I represent something for them, whatever that is, that makes them relate to me more easily. Some people see Psychotherapy and Analysis as an expensive indulgence. Is there any assistance available to people who want to
be in therapy and are finding it difficult to justify the expense? Well I think it is expensive and I think it does cut out a lot of people because of this expense. But I tell clients that this is about your mental health and so you are investing in your emotional welfare and giving yourself time, which is very important. But I do understand. However, there are other alternatives available for some people, like low cost therapy or free therapy through the NHS which your GP can refer you to. What made you decide to become a Therapist? Two reasons. The first, was that I had therapy in my early 20’s and I found it very helpful, and then I came to a cross road about what to do with my career, and I decided that I was not going to be a Lawyer, an Accountant or an Engineer and because of my positive earlier experience in therapy, I found myself being drawn to becoming a Therapist and that is how it all started. For anyone who is thinking about this line of work, what are the requirements to become a Psychotherapist/Analyst and how long is the training? First let me say that life experience is crucial as part of the training, but also there are other avenues for training, so you can either enter into the training with a degree, or gain a degree from the training, which could either be a Diploma a Masters or a PHD. The length of training can stretch from 4 to 7 years, maybe longer, depending on your own personal process, which is a very important part of the training. What would you say to someone who is struggling and could benefit from therapy? First, you’re not alone. Second, visit your GP and ask to be referred to your local IAPT service (Increasing Access to Psychological Therapy) or other services which could be available to you. Tips for Completing Jamaica Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) Application Forms By: Maureen Smith

ome individuals living overseas are failing to complete their Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) application forms correctly. This not only creates more work for the Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) who are responsible for processing TRN applications, but it leads to applications being delayed. Below are some guidance notes to help overseas applicants complete those areas within the TRN application forms where most difficulties arise. 1. Box 10 – Nationality This section often causes confusion amongst senior citizens. If you were born in Jamaica and have or are entitled to have a Jamaican passport, then your nationality should be stated as Jamaican. This does not take away from your naturalisation or citizenship status of the country in which you now reside. 2. Box 14 – Mother’s Name (Maiden) Where some surnames are the same as a first or middle name, it will be difficult

to differentiate between them. It is also worth noting here that the information being sought is your mother’s maiden name. To avoid confusion, this information should be presented as follows: SMITH, Janet Mavis If your mother never married, then simply provide her name as is, in the same format shown above. 3. Box 15 – Name of Applicant’s Spouse This should be stated in the same format as for Box 14 above. 4. Box 16 – NIS, Income Tax & Reference No Applicants living overseas do not need to complete this section of the TRN application form. 5. Box 17 – Identification (ID) The Tax Administration Jamaica will only accept notarised copies of passports or photocard Driver’s Licences by way of ID from applicants living overseas. He will replace “Nasty Nick Cotton as the show’s trouble-maker in the week when the character is set to be killed off.
When he joined Geoff Schumann on tour across Britain in 1993, his popularity grew to new heights and he has never looked back. Amazingly, in an interview in 2000, Blackwood claimed that if he had not made it in show business he would have been “a graphic designer, designing buildings.” I’m sure that you would agree that he has chosen the right path for his life. Here, we time-line Blackwood’s career so far: • 1994 - brief appearances on the 90’s hit shows, The Real McCoy and Blouse & Skirt • 1996 - Joined forces with presenter, June Sarpong to front MTV’s prime-time music request show, MTV Select. • 1999 - Secured his own weekly show on Channel 4. The Richard Blackwood Show • 2000 - Scored a UK #3 hit single with the song “Mama Who Da Man”, based on “Mama Used to Say” by his uncle Junior Giscombe.
Born 15th May 1972, British comedian, former media personality, actor and rapper Richard Blackwood was Influenced in his early years by the amazing Richard Pryor. It wasn’t until he was twenty, however, and had graduated from university with a BA honours in Business Studies that Blackwood realised his dream to be in the entertainment industry. His dream came true when he performed his first stand-up show at The Spot” in Covent Garden. He was a natural, and soon became an instant hit with the public and his peers.

The Pope said, “On February 14 next I will have the joy of holding a Consistory, during which I will name 15 new Cardinals who, coming from 14 countries from every continent, manifest the indissoluble links between the Church of Rome and particular Churches present in the world. “On Sunday February 15 I will preside at a solemn con-celebration with the new Cardinals. On February 12 and 13 I will hold a Consistory with all the Cardinals to reflect on the orientations and proposals for the reform of the Roman Curia.”
Addis Ababa braces itself for first metro in Sub-Saharan Africa The $475 million Addis Ababa Light Railway, similar to London Docklands Light Railway, will launch in early February.
The light railway consists of two lines running for 32km with underground and over ground sections, 39 stations, and two operators - the Ethiopian Railways Corporation and Shenzhen Metro. Ten trams were delivered last month. The three-section, 70% low-floor cars have an entrance height of 350mm and a steel and aluminium body for strength and lightness. Designed to operate in pairs at speeds of 70 km/h the trams are being assembled in Addis Ababa and will be ready for test runs this month.
Officials visited the dam were briefed by Engineer Ms Azeb Asnake, Project Manager and Director General of Ethiopian Electricity Corporation. President Museveni said Ethiopia’s use of its natural resources for sustainable development should be emulated by countries. Ethiopia’s first ever Waste-To-Energy facility, the 50mw Repi project in Addis Ababa, is 58% complete; the 153mw Adama II wind power project is 82% complete and the 51 MW Adama I wind power project, completed two years ago, is now fully operational.

ne of the top Nigerian Actor; Muna Obiekwe died on Sunday 18th January 2015 around 4:15pm in hospital in Festac Lagos after his battle with kidney failure. Obiekwe had been battling with kidney disease for a long time which he reportedly kept secret from his friend and colleagues in the Nigerian Entertainment Industry. His condition deteriorated in recent times, which eventually led to his death. The news from reliable source said that “Obiekwe was rushed to the hospital after he was found vomiting at home.
